Where kebab-case is used
- URL slugs:
/best-coffee-shops-dubai/. Google recommends hyphens rather than underscores to separate words in URLs. - CSS class names:
.nav-item-active. - File and folder names:
annual-report-2026.pdf. - Command-line options:
--dry-run. - dot.case: keys in configuration and translation files, such as
app.header.title.
For URLs, also consider removing accents (é → e) and very short words. This converter keeps accented letters as they are.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it called kebab-case?
The words look like pieces of food on a skewer: like-this. It's also called dash-case or spinal-case.
Should URLs use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google's URL guidelines recommend hyphens to separate words, so kebab-case is the usual choice for slugs.
