Turn ALL CAPS, lowercase or messy text into clean sentences. The first letter of every sentence is capitalized and everything else is lowercased — acronyms like NASA are kept.

What is sentence case?

Sentence case is the way ordinary sentences are written: the first word starts with a capital letter and the rest of the words are lowercase, except proper nouns (names, places, brands) and the pronoun “I”.

It's the most readable style for longer text, and many organizations — including the Google and Microsoft writing style guides — recommend it for headings and interface text too.

Rules this converter follows

  • Capitalizes the first letter of the text and the first letter after a period, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis followed by a space.
  • Capitalizes the first letter of every new line, so lists and headings come out right.
  • Skips opening punctuation: “¿hola?” becomes “¿Hola?” and “(note) text” becomes “(Note) text”.
  • In English, the standalone word “i” becomes “I” (also in I'm, I'll, I've).
  • Keeps acronyms written in capitals, such as NASA, USA or PDF, unless the whole text is in capitals. You can switch this off.

Limitations to check by hand

No automatic converter can recognize every name. Proper nouns such as cities, people and brands are lowercased unless they're written as acronyms, so read the result once before publishing.

Abbreviations that end in a period (e.g., Dr., U.S.) look like the end of a sentence, so the next word may be capitalized.

Writing in German? Sentence case lowercases nouns, which German always capitalizes. Use it as a starting point and re-capitalize nouns.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert ALL CAPS to sentence case?

Paste the text into the box above with Sentence case selected. The result appears instantly; press Copy result to use it.

Does sentence case capitalize names?

Only if they start a sentence or are written as acronyms. Other names are lowercased, so check people, places and brand names after converting.

Should headings use sentence case or title case?

Both are correct; it depends on your style guide. See sentence case vs. title case for a comparison, or use the title case converter.
